General Description:

The EarthClock Calendar app is so much more than just a clock & calendar. Earth, Moon & Sun; their movements, rotation & orbital period are what give us the solar day, lunar month & seasonal year, the basic units of time & date. EarthClock shows planetary time & date. Every time you look to see What time is it?, you are reminded of the fact that we are all of us living on a planet, the living Earth, which carries you & feeds you, like a mother.

Unique Features:

EarthClock has no competition. It is unique, beautiful, educational & transformative. EarthClock features planet Earth at the center of a specially modified, time- & date-telling celestial ring. EarthClock automatically places a time zone-spanning hour hand at your location on the globe, taking into account your longitude & latitude. The Earth (with hour hand attached) spins once per day relative to the Sun. Think of the Moon going through its phases as just another hand on the calendar-clock. The Moon orbits the Earth about once every 29 & 1/2 days. Think of the signs of the zodiac as the months of a seasonal year. (The Sun, fixed at noon at the top of the dial, appears to move through all 12 signs of the zodiac over the course of a seasonal year.) Over the course of a year, the Sun also moves back & forth on the date indicator, and you can see how this effects the Earth’s circle of illumination. And don’t forget the twilight dial, which always shows the time of Sun rise & Sun set for any latitude & time of year.

Widget:

One of the most exciting features of the EarthClock app is that it offers a widget which shows up-to-date, planetary information right on the home screen of your iPhone. The “wide widget” (recommended) shows EarthClock to the left and a list of all day-events to the right. (You have to select the widget yourself. We can’t install it for you.)

Select Calendars:

You get ReConnected to the living Earth & solar system when you pay attention to the natural rhythms of the Earth. EarthClock can also help you reconnect to other cultures & people all around the globe. It does this by making available to you a variety of cultural calendars to select from.

EarthClock comes with 2 free calendars: The Gregorian & Bahai calendars. The Chinese Agricultural calendar is available for 99¢ as an in-app purchase, and soon EarthClock will offer: Islamic, Hebrew, ancient & modern Hindu, Persian, Ecclesiastical, Tibetan calendar, & more.

Every culture is defined by their calendar & how they organize time. With EarthClock, you can see how one calendar compares to another & how well they compare with the cycles of nature & the agricultural biorhythms our calendar units are named after.

Both the Gregorian & Bahai calendars are solar calendars, designed to stay in alignment with the seasonal year. The Islamic calendar (coming soon) is a lunar calendar that doesn’t keep track of the seasonal year. The Chinese calendar is a lunisolar, agricultural calendar. Both the Sun & Moon are important for agriculture.

By following the festivals & customs of an agricultural society, we can attune ourselves to the natural cycles of the seasons & harmonize better with both nature & our fellow human beings (human nature).

Benefits:

People refuse to give up their agricultural or religious calendars, and why should they? There’s nothing wrong with consulting 2 or more calendars, just like there’s nothing wrong with speaking 2 or more languages. The EarthClock Calendar app is the Rosetta Stone of Calendars.

Testifying before Congress in 1985, on the subject of Climate Change, Carl Sagan said the following: “What is essential for this problem is a global consciousness, a view that transcends our exclusive identification with the generational and political groupings into which by accident we have been born. The solution to these problems requires a perspective that embraces the planet and the future, because we are all in this greenhouse together.”
